Inflammaging: The Silent Driver of Ageing

with Dr Victoria Manning, Author of “Busting the Code to Ageing – How to Win the Inflammation Game”

Inflammaging is a scientific term describing chronic, low-grade inflammation that accelerates the ageing process from the inside out.

Unlike acute inflammation, which helps the body heal, inflammaging is persistent and invisible, damaging your skin, organs, and overall vitality over time.

As a GMC-registered GP, aesthetic medicine specialist, and author of Busting the Code to Ageing – How to Win the Inflammation Game (launching July 2025), I’ve seen how addressing inflammaging transforms not only how we look, but how we feel and function at every age.

Inflammaging: The Hidden Driver of Ageing and Chronic Disease

Inflammaging is the chronic, low-grade inflammation that develops as we age, quietly accelerating skin ageing, tissue damage, and the risk of chronic diseases.

Unlike acute inflammation, which helps us heal, inflammaging is a persistent “silent alarm” driven by an overactive immune system.

Key players include neutrophils (rapid responders to injury), macrophages (the clean-up crew), and T- and B-cells (targeted defenders). When these cells remain on high alert, they create ongoing inflammation that speeds up the ageing process. Modern lifestyle factors—like poor sleep, processed foods, stress, and inactivity—fuel this cycle.

By understanding and managing inflammaging with targeted nutrition, lifestyle changes, and advanced therapies, we can lay the foundation for a longer, healthier, and more vibrant life.
